MANOMAY KOSH
MANOMAY KOSH
In Yogic and Ayurvedic science, the Manomay Kosh (Mind Sheath) is the third of the five layers (Pancha Koshas) of human existence. It represents the psychological and emotional level, acting as a bridge between the physical body and the higher intellect.
Service therapy for Manomay Kosh aims to calm the "instinctive mind," resolve emotional disturbances, and harmonize sensory perceptions.
- Function: It receives sensory inputs (sight, sound, touch, etc.) and interprets them as pleasant or unpleasant.
- Imbalance: When this sheath is "disturbed" by stress, anxiety, or trauma, it creates a "speeding up" of thoughts (Adhis), which eventually manifests as physical disease (Vyadhis) in the physical body (Annamay Kosh).
A. Pratyahara (Withdrawal of Senses)
This is the primary "service" for the mind. It involves consciously withdrawing attention from external distractions.
- Technique: Closing the eyes, finding silence, and practicing internal focus.
- Therapeutic Benefit: Reduces sensory overload and calms the nervous system.
B. Yoga Nidra (Psychic Sleep)
Often called "sleepless sleep," this is a structured guided relaxation technique.
- Technique: Lying in Shavasana while following a voice that rotates awareness through the body and mind.
- Therapeutic Benefit: Releases deep-seated emotional tensions (Samskaras) and balances the subconscious.
C. Mantra & Sound Therapy (Naad Yoga)
The mind is highly sensitive to vibration. Specific sounds can "break" negative thought patterns.
- Technique: Chanting "AUM," Bija Mantras (seed sounds), or listening to specific Ragas.
- Therapeutic Benefit: Resonates with brain waves to induce a state of relaxation and mental clarity.
D. Dharana (Concentration)
Training the mind to stay on one point to prevent the "monkey mind" effect.
- Technique: Trataka (candle gazing) or focusing on the breath.
- Therapeutic Benefit: Increases willpower and mental stability.
