FIRE ELEMENT
FIRE ELEMENT
The Fire Element (known as Agni or Tejas in Sanskrit) is the third element in the sequence. It represents transformation, heat, light, and metabolism. While Space provides the container and Air provides the movement, Fire provides the energy to convert one thing into another—whether that is food into energy or information into knowledge.
In service therapy, the Fire element is the "Physiological Engine." It is the force that burns away toxins and illuminates the path of the mind.
- Sense Organ: Eyes (Sight).
- Action Organ: Feet (Movement toward a goal/Vision).
- Qualities: Hot, sharp, light, dry, and spreading.
Primary Location: The stomach, small intestine, liver, and the gray matter of the brain
A. Surya Bhedana Pranayama (Sun-Piercing Breath)
This is the "heating" breath used to stimulate the solar energy in the body.
- Technique: Inhaling only through the right nostril (Pingala/Solar channel) and exhaling through the left.
- Therapeutic Benefit: Increases digestive power, improves low blood pressure, and dispels depression or mental dullness.
B. Agni Sara (Stoking the Digestive Fire)
A kriya (cleansing action) specifically for the "jatharagni" (stomach fire).
- Technique: Exhaling completely and rapidly pulling the abdominal muscles in and out without taking a breath.
- Therapeutic Benefit: Massages all digestive organs, cures constipation, and boosts the metabolic rate.
C. Trataka (Candle Gazing)
Because Fire is connected to the eyes, gazing at a flame is a direct service to this element.
- Technique: Steadily gazing at a candle flame without blinking until the eyes water.
- Therapeutic Benefit: Cleanses the tear ducts, improves vision, and builds the "mental fire" of concentration and willpower.
D. Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations)
The ultimate physical service for the Fire element.
