SOMATIC EXPERIENCING THERAPY

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented therapeutic model designed to heal trauma and other stress disorders. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, it is based on the observation that wild animals, though routinely threatened, are rarely traumatized. They "shake off" the intense energy of a life-threatening event once the danger has passed.

In humans, this "survival energy" often becomes trapped in the nervous system when we are unable to complete our natural "fight, flight, or freeze" responses. SE helps the body complete these stalled cycles, releasing the "thaw" from the frozen nervous system.

Nervous System Regulation: Moving the body from a state of "Hyper-arousal" (anxiety) or "Hypo-arousal" (depression) back into the Window of Tolerance.

Completing the Survival Cycle: Allowing the body to execute the "missing" movements or responses that were blocked during the original trauma.

Building Resiliency: Increasing the body's capacity to handle stress without "checking out" (dissociating) or overreacting.

Restoring the Flow: Reconnecting the mind to the "Soma" (the living body) so the individual feels safe in their own skin.

S---Sensation---Identifying physical feelings like "tightness," "warmth," or "tingling."

I----Image---Noting any internal pictures or symbols that arise during the sensation.

B---Behavior---Observing small movements, like finger twitching or a shift in posture.

A---Affect---Tracking emotions like fear, sadness, or sudden joy.

M---Meaning---The labels or stories the mind attaches to the experience.

PTSD and Complex Trauma: When "talk therapy" isn't working because the trauma is "stuck" in the body, not the story.

Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia: When the body is in a permanent state of "bracing" against a perceived threat.

Anxiety and Panic Attacks: When the "Fight/Flight" response is stuck in the "ON" position.

Dissociation: When you feel "numb," "floaty," or disconnected from your physical self.

The ultimate result of Somatic Experiencing is a sense of Embodiment. You stop living exclusively in your head and start feeling "at home" in your body. Your reactions become proportional to the present moment, rather than being echoes of the past. You regain the ability to feel pleasure, relaxation, and a sense of deep, quiet strength.
