MBCT THERAPY

MBCT stands for Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. It is an evidence-based group program designed to help people who struggle with repeated episodes of depression and chronic unhappiness.

It blends the tools of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with the meditative practices of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

The central idea of MBCT is that when people with a history of depression feel a bit "down," they often react by trying to "fix" the mood. This "doing" mode involves over-analyzing and ruminating, which actually feeds the depression.

MBCT teaches you the "being" mode: observing negative thoughts and physical sensations with curiosity and without judgment, rather than getting swept away by them.

MBCT was specifically developed to prevent relapse in clinical depression. Research shows it can reduce the risk of relapse by up to 50% for those who have experienced three or more episodes. It is also highly effective for:

  • General Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Reducing the "worry loops."
  • Stress Management: Helping people handle high-pressure environments.

Emotional Regulation: For those who feel easily "triggered" by small setbacks.

Unlike some therapies where you just show up once a week, MBCT requires a commitment to daily home practice (usually 30–45 minutes of meditation). This is because you are essentially "rewiring" your brain's default response to stress.
