ACT THERAPY
ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It is a unique, action-oriented approach to psychotherapy that stems from traditional behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
Unlike other therapies that try to "fix" or change negative thoughts, ACT teaches you to stop fighting your internal experiences and start living a life aligned with your values.
- Acceptance: Instead of fighting or hiding from painful feelings, you learn to open up and make room for them. You stop seeing them as "enemies."
- Cognitive Defusion: Learning to see thoughts as just "words" or "pictures" in your head rather than absolute truths. (e.g., instead of "I am a failure," you think, "I am having the thought that I am a failure.")
- Being Present: Practicing mindfulness to stay connected to the "here and now" rather than ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.
- Self-as-Context: Developing a sense of self that is separate from your thoughts and emotions. You are the "observer" of your experiences, not the experiences themselves.
- Values Clarification: Identifying what truly matters to you in life (e.g., being a loving parent, being creative, being honest).
- Committed Action: Taking concrete steps to live according to those values, even if it brings up discomfort or anxiety.

Method---Logic, evidence-checking, and restructuring.---Mindfulness, metaphors, and values-work.
View of Pain---Pain is a problem to be solved or mitigated.===Pain is inevitable; the struggle is the problem.
